Unexpected Joy While Awaiting a Tire

Alex celebrates her birthday, even while making lattes.

I got a flat tire & pulled in to the tire joint to get a new one. So I’m checking my email at Starbucks on Galen St., nursing a large middle-of-a-busy -week coffee, when all the sudden, people are singing Happy Birthday. And a large cake covered in beautiful fruit slices appears. And  big, stuffed giraffe. How fun is this!

I love the fact that some of the regulars are friends with folks who work here. And I love that they went out of their way — all the way to Chinatown, actually — to get a delicious cake with which to delight a friend in the middle of her work shift.

All around us, holiday music is blaring out a message of holiday cheer. (Right now at Starbucks, we’re hearing “Santa Claus is coming to town”). How refreshing to see people actually bringing this message to life on an “ordinary” Wednesday morning. Why wait?

And the cake was delicious, by the way!

About amymccreath

I'm a pastor and mother who loves to make connections between people, between ideas, and between stuff we label "sacred" and "secular." I aspire to be like a Cedar of Lebanon in the midst of the changes and chances of life, but like most folks, generally find that I can really only navigate the tumult hand in hand with others. Good coffee helps, too.
