The view from here

How “here” are you? From some hilltops in Watertown, one can see pretty far. Cambridge, Boston, Belmont, Waltham, Newton — They are all within view. And they are on our minds, too, I’ve discovered.

As I’ve been getting to know folks here, I’ve found that a lot of Watertown residents spend many of their waking hours elsewhere. They work, worship, recreate, and visit relatives all over the Boston area. I have yet to discover a true “downtown” — a place where the community intentionally gathers to be together (aside from the Faire on the Square, where there is the incentive of tchotchkes and cotton candy).

I am intrigued by Patch, the emerging effort to get folks in towns like Watertown to build community online. Is that the new “watering hole” or “coffee hour”? (www.watertown.patch.com).

How present are you to Watertown, or your own town? What are your thoughts about being here and there at the same time?

You can see the Prudential Center from Edgefield Road

About amymccreath

I'm a pastor and mother who loves to make connections between people, between ideas, and between stuff we label "sacred" and "secular." I aspire to be like a Cedar of Lebanon in the midst of the changes and chances of life, but like most folks, generally find that I can really only navigate the tumult hand in hand with others. Good coffee helps, too.
